The City Present favors gourmet takes on snacks and casual foods. So when we heard of the opening of Sigmund pretzel bakery on the Lower East Side, we knew we had to make a special trek. It was definitely worthwhile. This year-old gourmet pretzelteria, on quiet street in Alphabet City, is an essential stop.
The organic, hand-made pretzels are large, fat, fresh and chewy, and come in a bagel-like variety, with some unique inventions that are masterful. The City Present strongly recommends the gruyere-paprika and jalapeño-cheddar. Aside from these clever flavors, Sigmund also offers a choice of dipping sauces, ranging from herb goat cheese to specialty mustard.
Given these multiple combinations, its essential to snack on more than just one. Enjoy at least a few pretzels on the spot, and be sure to take home several more, to appreciate the variety of creative flavors. The City Present suggests a 1-to-4 ratio of eat-in/carry-out. The light, spacious interior has tables, wi-fi and a restroom, and the coffee is also quite good, so customers are invited to linger.
